Android offers APIs to developers that let them create virtual private networks (VPNs). These apps can provide VPN protocols that the built-in client can’t support and allow special info you to connect to the VPN service without complex configuration.

This article explains how you can use the OpenVPN app on your Android device to connect to NordVPN servers. It also shows you how to manually configure the connection using the NordVPN app and an OpenVPN profile. This method requires more technical knowledge, but can give you a greater control over your mobile data and your connection quality.

Download the OpenVPN Connect application from the Google Play Store. You will then need to obtain the OpenVPN configuration files from your VPN service provider. These config files are tagged with a.ovpn extension and can be downloaded from the VPN provider’s website or by reaching their live chat team for assistance. After downloading the config files on your PC or Android device, you are able to transfer them. You can do this by directly downloading them to the device, or by using an app such as ZArchiver.

Launch the OpenVPN application and tap “+” to add the VPN profile. Select a server and tap “Connect”. Once connected, the tunnel will secure all Internet traffic to the server. The app shows the status and information of the connection on the Status tab. The app also comes with an all-day-long VPN option that keeps the connection alive even when the app’s not active.
